Verse 1.1

Translation The Sun, who is conceived as having form in the moon, who is the path and the soul of rebirth for the knowers of the Self, who is the sacrificial ritual for the self-realized and the sacrifice for the worshippers, who is the lord of the immortal stars, who is the all-pervading cause of the dissolution, origin, and sustenance of the worlds, and who is heard of in the Vedas as having many forms—may that Sun, the lamp of the three worlds with his many rays, ever grant us speech.

Meaning This opening verse establishes the Sun not merely as a physical celestial body, but as the supreme consciousness that permeates all existence. It describes the Sun as the underlying reality behind the moon's reflected light and the very engine of reincarnation for those who seek liberation. By identifying the Sun as both the ritual and the deity of the ritual, the text dissolves the separation between the worshipper, the act of worship, and the divine object, suggesting that true knowledge reveals the Sun as the inner Self of all beings.

Furthermore, the verse attributes to the Sun the total cycle of cosmic time: creation, preservation, and dissolution. He is the lord of the fixed stars and the source of illumination for the three realms of existence. The petition at the end is significant; the seeker does not ask for material wealth or power, but for "speech." In the Vedic tradition, right speech is the vehicle of truth and wisdom. To be granted speech by the Sun is to be empowered to articulate the divine reality, aligning one's own voice with the cosmic order.

Contemplation Before speaking to anyone today, pause for a moment to visualize the sun as a lamp within your chest. Ask yourself if the words you are about to say are illuminated by clarity and truth, or if they arise from confusion. Intend that your speech today should serve as a small light for others, reflecting the one great light that sustains the world.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Jyotish — classical Vedic astrology tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
