Verse 1.1
Translation One should meditate upon the Deity who wears white garments, whose complexion resembles the moon, who has four arms, and whose face is serene, for the pacification of all obstacles. That supreme light, which bestows vision upon the ancestors, the gods, and men through the divisions of months, years, and days, and which travels upward, sometimes to the right and sometimes to the left, may it direct us to infinite prosperity.
Meaning The verse begins by establishing the proper state of mind for the student of astrology. Before calculating charts or predicting events, one must invoke the divine presence that governs time itself. The description of the Deity with a moon-like complexion and white garments signifies purity, coolness, and the reflective nature of the mind required to understand celestial influences. By visualizing this serene form, the seeker clears the internal turbulence that often clouds judgment, ensuring that the study of stars remains a sacred act of worship rather than mere fortune-telling.
The second part of the verse defines the very subject of Jyotish. It describes the supreme light that moves through the sky, dividing time into days, months, and years, thereby creating the framework within which ancestors, gods, and humans exist and act. This movement, sometimes to the right and sometimes to the left, refers to the planetary motions that mark the rhythm of destiny. The verse acknowledges that this cosmic light is the ultimate source of vision for all beings, illuminating the path of life and offering the potential for boundless abundance to those who align themselves with its divine order.
Contemplation Before you look at any chart or read any forecast today, pause for a moment to visualize a cool, white light rising above you, silent and serene. Acknowledge that the time you are living in right now is not a random occurrence but a specific gift of vision from this supreme light. Silently offer your intention to use whatever insights you gain today not for fear or greed, but to bring peace to your own mind and clarity to your actions, trusting that the same light guiding the stars is guiding your steps.
A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Jyotish — classical Vedic astrology tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
