Verse 1.2

Translation Having bowed with devotion to the Goddess of Speech, the family deity, my teachers, the gurus of time and knowledge, the Sun and the other nine planets, the Lord of Hosts, and the Supreme Lord, I, Mantreshwara, the knower of divine will, shall here compose the Phaladipika. Having condensed the teachings spoken by Parashara and other sages, I offer this perfectly clear lamp of results for the delight of those learned in astrology.

Meaning This verse establishes the sacred lineage and the humble posture required to approach the science of light. Before a single prediction is made or a chart is cast, the author anchors the work in reverence. He acknowledges that true insight does not arise from intellectual cleverness alone but flows from a chain of grace: the power of speech that allows expression, the ancestral and spiritual guides who hold the tradition, the cosmic forces represented by the planets, and the ultimate source of all order. By naming these sources, the text reminds us that astrology is a received wisdom, a trust passed down through generations of seers, not a system invented by the individual mind.

The purpose of this compilation is clarity and utility. Mantreshwara states that he has distilled the vast, often complex oral and written traditions of sages like Parashara into a concise form. The title Phaladipika, or "Lamp of Results," suggests that the goal is to illuminate the consequences of actions and planetary positions, dispelling the darkness of uncertainty. This illumination is offered specifically for the joy and benefit of fellow seekers and scholars, indicating that the study of the stars is meant to be a shared journey toward understanding the divine structure of time, rather than a tool for fear or manipulation.

Contemplation Before you engage with any complex problem or seek guidance today, pause to silently acknowledge the sources of your own understanding. Reflect for a moment on the teachers, ancestors, or experiences that have illuminated your path thus far. Offer a brief internal gesture of gratitude to them and to the larger order of life that sustains you. Begin your next task not with the anxiety of needing to figure it all out alone, but with the quiet confidence that you are standing on the shoulders of a vast tradition of wisdom.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Jyotish — classical Vedic astrology tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
