Verse 1.3

Translation Here, the time of birth is first to be known with special care through instruments such as the gnomon and others, along with the moment of the ghatika; having understood the longitude of the planets through mathematical calculations based on that established time, let the astrologer then declare the nature, strength, and result of that specific house.

Meaning This verse establishes the foundational discipline of Jyotish: precision in time is the gateway to truth. The text insists that before any interpretation of fate can occur, the exact moment of birth must be determined using reliable observational tools and traditional timekeeping measures like the ghatika. Without this rigorous alignment between the celestial clock and the earthly moment of entry, the entire chart remains a distorted mirror, reflecting nothing but error. It reminds us that spiritual insight in this tradition is not born of vague intuition alone but is grounded in exacting astronomical reality.

Once the time is secured, the scholar must engage the intellect through ganita, or mathematical calculation, to find the true positions of the wandering stars. Only after the longitudes are fixed with accuracy can one proceed to judge the bhava, the house of life. The sequence is sacred: first the data of time, then the math of position, and finally the wisdom of prediction. To skip the labor of calculation is to build a palace on sand; the strength and fruit of any planetary influence can only be spoken when the foundation of time is unshakable.

Contemplation Before you seek an answer to a pressing question today, pause to verify the facts of your situation as if they were the degrees of a planet. Ask yourself if you are reacting to a precise reality or to a模糊 estimate of what happened. Spend five minutes correcting one assumption you hold about your current circumstances, knowing that clear vision arises only when the timing and details of your story are accurately aligned.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Jyotish — classical Vedic astrology tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
