Shadbala Calculator

The six-fold strength of every planet in rupas — strong, or struggling.

Shadbala — 'six strengths' — measures how much real power each planet has to deliver its results, in units called rupas. A planet can be well-placed by sign yet still be too weak to act on it; Shadbala is how you tell. This tool computes all six strength sources for each of the seven planets and shows whether each meets its classical minimum.

What you'll see

What is Shadbala?

Shadbala is the six-fold strength of a planet, measured in rupas (1 rupa = 60 virupas). The six sources are Sthana Bala (positional strength), Dig Bala (directional), Kala Bala (temporal), Cheshta Bala (motional), Naisargika Bala (natural) and Drik Bala (aspectual). Added together they give a planet's total capacity to act.

Each planet has a different minimum required strength to be considered strong — roughly 5 to 7 rupas depending on the planet. A planet above its minimum can deliver the promise of its placement; a planet below it tends to under-deliver, no matter how good its dignity or house looks.

Why dignity alone isn't enough

An exalted planet that is weak in Shadbala is like a talented person with no energy — the potential is there but the delivery falters. This is why two charts with the 'same' placement can play out so differently, and why Shadbala is one of the most important quantitative checks in classical Jyotish.

Frequently asked

What is Shadbala in Vedic astrology?

Shadbala is the six-fold measurement of a planet's strength, expressed in rupas. It combines positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural and aspectual strength to show how capable a planet is of delivering its results.

What is a good Shadbala score?

A planet is considered strong when its total rupas meet its minimum required value — roughly 5 to 7 rupas depending on the planet. Above the minimum it can act on its placement; below it, it tends to under-deliver.

Is Shadbala the same as a planet's dignity?

No. Dignity (exalted, own sign, debilitated) is one input, but Shadbala is a fuller, quantitative measure. A dignified planet can still be weak in Shadbala, which is why both are checked together.
