Verse 1.2

अथ ब्रह्माण्डनिर्णयः । देव्युवाच । देवदेव महादेव कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि । सर्वसिद्धिकरं ज्ञानं वदयस्व मम प्रभो

Translation Now follows the determination of the cosmic egg. The Goddess spoke: O God of gods, O Great God, having made compassion upon me, O Lord, speak to me the knowledge that accomplishes all perfections.

Meaning This opening invocation establishes the necessary ground for receiving the science of breath. Before any technique is taught, the text situates the individual breath within the macrocosm, the Brahmanda or cosmic egg. It declares that the rhythm flowing within the human nose is not merely a biological function but a microcosmic reflection of the universal pulse. To study the breath is to study the structure of the universe itself, for the same laws that govern the stars and the elements govern the inhalation and exhalation of the living being.

The Goddess Parvati approaches Shiva not with intellectual curiosity but with a plea for compassion, acknowledging that this wisdom cannot be grasped by mere effort or logic alone. She asks for the knowledge that yields siddhi, or perfection, indicating that the mastery of breath is the master key to all spiritual and worldly achievements. In this tradition, true power arises only when the ego surrenders to the divine source, transforming the practice from a mechanical exercise into a sacred communion that aligns the seeker with the cosmic order.

Contemplation Before beginning any breath awareness today, pause for a moment and silently acknowledge that the air entering your nostrils is the same energy that sustains the planets and stars. Visualize your body not as a separate entity, but as a small universe nested within the greater cosmic egg, pulsing in perfect sync with the whole. Offer a brief inner prayer of humility, asking that your practice be guided by grace rather than personal will, and then observe the next ten breaths as the movement of the cosmos within you.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Swarodaya — the yoga of the breath tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
