Translation How was the universe born, how does it revolve, and how is it dissolved? O God, speak the determination of the cosmos.
Meaning The seeker begins not with external observation but with the fundamental inquiry into the cycle of existence: creation, sustenance, and dissolution. By addressing the Divine directly, the verse establishes that the mechanics of the macrocosm are not merely intellectual puzzles to be solved by logic, but living mysteries to be revealed through grace and direct experience. The question implies that the rhythm of the universe is a single, continuous movement rather than three separate events.
In the context of Swarodaya, this inquiry sets the stage for understanding that the breath is the microcosmic mirror of this cosmic dance. The rising breath corresponds to creation and activity, the flowing breath to sustenance and balance, and the suspended or diminishing breath to dissolution and rest. To know the universe is to know the breath, for the same intelligence that spins the galaxies regulates the inhalation and exhalation within the body.
Contemplation Sit quietly and observe the natural rhythm of your breath without trying to change it. As you inhale, silently acknowledge this as the moment of birth and expansion within you. As you exhale, recognize this as the moment of dissolution and return. Rest in the brief pause between the two breaths, sensing the still point where the universe is neither created nor destroyed, but simply exists in potential. Carry this awareness of the inner cycle into your daily activities, noting how your energy rises, sustains, and recedes throughout the day.
A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Swarodaya — the yoga of the breath tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
