Sutra 1.12

विस्मयो योग भूमिका

Translation Wonder is the ground of yoga.

Meaning In the Trika tradition, wonder or vismaya is not merely an emotional reaction to something new or surprising; it is the sudden, luminous shock of recognizing one's true nature as Shiva. When the mind stops its habitual grasping and labeling, and the veil of ordinary perception lifts even for an instant, what remains is a pure, vibrating awareness that is utterly fresh. This state of awe is the very foundation upon which all genuine spiritual practice rests, for it signifies that the limited ego has momentarily collapsed, allowing the infinite consciousness to shine through.

This sutra places us in the realm of Shambhavopaya, the way of Shiva, where realization happens not through gradual effort or complex techniques, but through a direct plunge into the intensity of the present moment. When you encounter the world with this quality of wonder, you are no longer analyzing experience from a distance; you are dissolved into it. The gap between the observer and the observed vanishes, and in that gapless presence, the universe reveals itself as a playful expression of your own divine consciousness.

Contemplation Throughout your day, whenever you encounter something ordinary—a cup of tea, the sound of traffic, the feeling of breath—pause and refuse to name it or categorize it. Instead, look at it as if you are seeing it for the very first time in existence, stripping away all memory and expectation. Rest in the sheer surprise that anything exists at all, and let that feeling of awe expand until you realize that the wonder you feel and the consciousness feeling it are one and the same.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
