Sutra 3.2

ज्ञानं बन्धः

Translation Knowledge is bondage.

Meaning In this context, knowledge refers not to the direct, intuitive recognition of one's true nature as Shiva, but to conceptual understanding, intellectual categorization, and the accumulation of facts about reality. It is the mind's tendency to grasp the infinite through finite labels, creating a veil of duality where the knower stands separate from the known. When we rely solely on the intellect to comprehend the Divine, we reduce the living, pulsating consciousness to a static object of study, thereby trapping ourselves in a network of concepts rather than experiencing the freedom of pure being.

This sutra highlights the specific limitation of the individual soul (anu) when operating through the faculty of discursive thought. As long as one believes that knowing about God is the same as being God, or that analyzing consciousness leads to liberation, one remains bound. The very act of defining limits the limitless; by holding onto a mental image of truth, we miss the truth itself, which exists only in the immediate, non-conceptual present. Thus, the accumulation of spiritual theories becomes the final and most subtle chain that prevents the dawn of true recognition.

Contemplation Throughout your day, notice the moment your mind attempts to label an experience or explain a feeling with words. When you catch yourself thinking, I understand this, or this is what is happening, gently pause and drop the definition. Rest for a few breaths in the raw sensation of the experience before the name arises, abiding in the silent awareness that perceives without needing to categorize, and recognize that this wordless presence is your actual freedom.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
