Translation The second arm is the waking state.
Meaning In the anatomy of the limited individual soul, known as the anu, consciousness has contracted into specific instruments or arms that reach out to grasp reality. The first arm is the inner world of dream and imagination; this second arm is the waking state, characterized by duality and the perception of external objects. Here, consciousness identifies so strongly with the physical body and the senses that it perceives the world as entirely separate from itself, creating a firm boundary between the observer and the observed.
Yet, even in this state of apparent separation, the power of the Supreme remains active, though veiled. This sutra reminds the seeker that the waking world is not an illusion to be rejected, but another limb of the divine body. Just as an arm is inseparable from the shoulder, the experiences of the waking state are inseparable from the consciousness that perceives them. The limitation lies not in the state itself, but in the forgetfulness of the source from which this arm extends.
Contemplation Throughout your day, whenever you engage with an external object or person, pause for a moment to recognize the space in which the perception arises. Instead of getting lost in the story of the object, feel the awareness that is holding the object. Silently affirm that this very act of seeing, hearing, or touching is an extension of your own divine capacity, an arm reaching out to embrace itself in the form of the world.
A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
