Translation Effort is the means of accomplishment.
Meaning In the stage of Shaktopaya, the path of energy, the seeker has moved beyond the need for external rituals or physical postures but has not yet arrived at the effortless spontaneity of pure awareness. Here, the mind is still active, and the sense of individual doership persists, though it is now directed inward. The sutra affirms that in this intermediate state, focused and intentional effort is not an obstacle but the very vehicle of realization. It is the deliberate application of will that aligns the scattered currents of consciousness toward the divine center.
This effort, however, differs fundamentally from the straining of the ego in the material world. It is a subtle, internal exertion known as iccha-shakti, the power of divine will. It involves the continuous, vigilant maintenance of awareness upon the true Self, refusing to be swept away by the automatic habits of the mind. Just as a river must be guided through a canal to reach a specific field, the flowing energy of consciousness must be consciously directed through sustained attention until it merges back into its source, Shiva.
Contemplation Throughout your day, choose one recurring activity, such as walking through a doorway or taking a breath before speaking, and use it as a trigger for a moment of intense, one-pointed recall of your own awareness. In that split second, apply a sharp, inward pull of attention, feeling the presence of the observer behind the eyes, and hold that focus with a gentle but firm determination before allowing the action to proceed.
A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
