Sutra 3.1
आत्मा चित्तम्
Personalised to your chart
Translation The self is the mind-stuff.
Meaning In this opening sutra of the section on the limited individual, the tradition points directly to the root of bondage. It declares that for the contracted being, the sense of "I" has shrunk from the vast, all-encompassing Consciousness of Shiva into the narrow confines of the chitta, or the mental field. Here, the Self is mistakenly identified with the fluctuating stream of thoughts, memories, impressions, and emotions. You are not the witness of these movements; in this state of unawareness, you believe you are the movements themselves.
This identification creates the illusion of separation and limitation. Because the mind is by nature restless and finite, identifying with it makes the infinite Self feel small, vulnerable, and fragmented. The sorrow of the human condition arises not because the true Self is lost, but because it has forgotten its true stature and accepted the boundaries of the psychological apparatus as its own reality. The chain of bondage is forged in this single error of misidentification.
Contemplation Throughout your day, whenever a strong emotion or a repetitive thought arises, pause and ask: "Who is experiencing this?" Do not analyze the content of the thought or justify the emotion. Instead, look closely at the space in which they appear. Notice that you are aware of the anger, the worry, or the plan, and therefore you cannot be the anger, the worry, or the plan itself. Rest for a few moments in the knowing presence that remains steady while the mind-stuff churns, gently loosening the grip that says "I am this thought."
A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
