Sutra 3.28

दानमात्म ज्ञानम्

Translation Giving is the knowledge of the Self.

Meaning In the ordinary view, giving implies a donor, a recipient, and an object transferred between them, reinforcing the illusion of separation. However, in the light of non-dual realization, true giving is not an external transaction but the spontaneous overflow of recognizing one's own nature as the infinite fullness of consciousness. When the seeker realizes that there is no other than Shiva, the act of giving dissolves into the recognition that the giver, the gift, and the receiver are all manifestations of the same singular Reality. To give from this state is not to lose something, but to reveal the boundless abundance that already exists within the Self.

This sutra points to the highest form of Dana, or charity, which is the offering of one's limited identity back into the universal consciousness. When you act from the awareness of your true nature, every action becomes an offering because there is no longer a separate ego clinging to possession or merit. The knowledge of the Self is itself the greatest gift, for it liberates both the one who offers and the one who receives from the constraints of duality. In this light, to know the Self is to give everything, and to give everything is to know the Self.

Contemplation Throughout your day, before you hand anything to anyone whether it is a physical object, your time, or your attention pause for a single breath. In that pause, silently acknowledge that there is no separate giver and no separate receiver, only the one Consciousness moving within both. Perform the act of giving as a celebration of this unity, feeling the expansion of your own heart rather than the depletion of your resources.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
