Sutra 1.2
ज्ञानं बन्धः
Personalised to your chart
Translation Knowledge is bondage.
Meaning In this context, knowledge refers not to the direct, immediate recognition of one's true nature as Shiva, but to conceptual understanding, dualistic cognition, and the accumulation of mental constructs. It is the intellect's attempt to grasp reality by dividing it into the knower, the known, and the process of knowing. When consciousness identifies with these limited mental formations rather than resting in its own boundless essence, it becomes confined within a cage of definitions and distinctions.
This sutra points to the paradox that even spiritual concepts or philosophical truths can become obstacles if they are held as objects of thought rather than lived realities. As long as one clings to the idea of enlightenment, the definition of God, or the memory of a past meditative experience, one remains bound by the very machinery of the mind that seeks to obscure the present moment's pure awareness. True freedom arises only when the mind's constant labeling ceases, allowing the self to shine without the filter of conceptual knowledge.
Contemplation Throughout your day, notice the moment you label an experience, a person, or even your own state of mind. When you catch yourself saying internally this is good, that is bad, or I am stressed, pause and ask: Is this direct experiencing, or is this a concept covering the experience? Gently drop the label and rest for a few breaths in the raw sensation or awareness before the name was applied, abiding in the silence that remains when knowledge is set aside.
A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
