Sutra 1.14

दृश्य शरीरम्

Translation The visible is the body.

Meaning In the ordinary state of consciousness, we identify the self with the physical form, perceiving the body as a solid, separate entity distinct from the world. This sutra reveals that what we call the body is nothing other than the field of the visible, the entire spectrum of objective experience. In the Trika view, there is no inert matter outside of consciousness; the so-called external world and the internal sense of bodily limitation are made of the same substance, which is the dynamic play of Shiva's awareness.

When the seeker realizes that the seen and the seer are not two, the rigid boundary of the skin dissolves. The body is no longer a cage confining the spirit but a transparent manifestation of the divine light. To say the visible is the body is to acknowledge that every object perceived, every sound heard, and every thought arisen is an extension of one's own universal form. The universe itself becomes the true body of the practitioner, pulsating with a single, non-dual life.

Contemplation As you move through your day, pause whenever your eyes rest on an object—a tree, a cup, or another person. Instead of labeling it as something outside of you, silently affirm: this sight is my own form. Feel the act of seeing not as a bridge crossing a gap between you and the world, but as the expansion of your own awareness taking that specific shape. Let the sensation of being a small, enclosed body soften until you feel that the horizon itself is the limit of your skin.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
