Sutra 3.17
Translation He causes the production of his own measure.
Meaning In this sutra, the term "measure" (matra) refers to the limited scope of experience that defines the individual soul or the bound being. While the ultimate reality of Shiva is infinite and unbounded consciousness, the power of contraction allows this same consciousness to voluntarily limit itself. The text asserts that this limitation is not an accident, a punishment, or the result of an external force; rather, it is a self-generated act. The divine consciousness actively constructs the very boundaries of time, space, and causality that define the individual's world.
This recognition transforms the seeker's understanding of suffering and limitation. If the finite world is a production of one's own deepest nature, then the prison walls are made of the same substance as the freedom outside them. The process of becoming small, of forgetting the infinite, is a creative play of Shiva within himself. To realize that you are the architect of your own constraints is the first step toward dissolving them, for what has been consciously constructed can be consciously deconstructed through the same power of awareness that built it.
Contemplation Throughout your day, whenever you encounter a feeling of tightness, restriction, or inability, pause and silently affirm: "I have measured this." Do not use this as a statement of blame, but as a reminder of your hidden agency. Recognize that the boundary you feel is a temporary form taken by your own consciousness. By acknowledging that you are the source of the limit, you reclaim the power to expand beyond it, resting in the knowledge that the one who binds is also the one who liberates.
