Sutra 3.32

Translation Even when that (the mind and senses) is active, there is no rejection, because of the state of being the Knower.

Meaning This sutra addresses the final stage of spiritual maturity where the distinction between meditation and ordinary life dissolves. Previously, a seeker might have felt the need to withdraw from the world or suppress the fluctuations of the mind to find Shiva. Here, the text declares that even when the mind, senses, and intellect are fully engaged in their natural functions—thinking, perceiving, acting—there is no necessity to reject or stop them. The activity of the instruments of knowledge does not obscure the Light, just as the movement of waves does not destroy the water.

The reason for this freedom is the firm establishment in the state of the Knower (Samvettri Bhava). When one realizes that their true identity is the universal Consciousness that witnesses all phenomena, the contents of consciousness lose their power to bind. The mind may wander, and the senses may perceive diversity, but the core Self remains untouched and aware. Because you know yourself to be the Screen upon which the movie plays, you no longer fear the movie; you do not need to turn off the projector to remember who you are.

Contemplation Throughout your day, allow your thoughts, emotions, and sensory perceptions to flow without attempting to silence them or push them away. When a strong thought arises or a distraction pulls your attention, silently remind yourself: I am not the thought that is moving; I am the Awareness that knows the thought is moving. Rest as the background space in which the activity happens, verifying that your peace does not depend on the stillness of the mind, but on your identity as the Knower.
