Sutra 3.23

मध्येऽवरः प्रसवः

Translation In the middle, the lower birth.

Meaning This sutra reveals a subtle trap within the spiritual journey itself. The "middle" refers to the state of the yogi who has risen above ordinary, worldly consciousness and is established in a refined meditative awareness. However, if one becomes attached to this intermediate state, mistaking the quietude of the mind for the ultimate reality of Shiva, a "lower birth" occurs. This is not a physical reincarnation into an animal or hell realm, but a spiritual stagnation where the seeker creates a new, more subtle ego based on their spiritual achievements.

In the Trika tradition, any state that is objectified or held as a possession becomes a limitation. When the practitioner clings to the bliss or silence of the middle state, they inadvertently contract the infinite consciousness into a finite experience. This attachment causes a fall from the potential of full recognition into a restricted existence, where the very tools of liberation become the chains of a new, more sophisticated bondage. The "lower birth" is the emergence of a spiritual identity that blocks the final surge into non-dual unity.

Contemplation As you move through your day, watch for the subtle pride that arises when you feel calm, focused, or spiritually superior to others. Notice if you are holding onto a specific meditative feeling as "yours" or as a place of safety. The practice is to immediately recognize this clinging as the "lower birth" happening in real time. Gently release the grip on that peaceful state, allowing it to flow through you without ownership, and rest as the open awareness that witnesses both the chaos and the calm without being defined by either.

A contemplative reading in the spirit of the Kashmir Shaivism (Trika / non-dual Tantra) tradition — an aid to reflection, not a substitute for a living teacher or the classical commentaries.
